It is the year 2059 and aliens have been appearing near Earth for the past few years. It seems they are all headed to a specific place that comes to be known as Pilgrimage Point. The governement has degreed that should any alien actually reach Pilgrimage Point, it will mean armageddon. A professor, Dr. Noguchi, has been working to try to revive one of the fallen aliens. Along with his team, Dr. Noguchi has been collecting pieces of destroyed aliens, slowly fitting them together like a modern Frankenstein to create what will become known as the Extra-1 (affectionately dubbed "Frank" by his creator). He enlists the help of one Maki Agata, one of his own students, in the hopes she can lure her metallurgist boyfriend Takuto to help with the final preparations for Frank's revival.


When Maki disappears, Takuto is bound and determined to find his silent lover and even goes so far as to hack into her computer terminal, tracing a random email to find her location. Soldiers bursting in interrupt the boy just as he finds it. Taken in darkness and silence, Takuto finds himself at M.O.R.G.U.E., the installation in which Dr. Noguchi is secretly doing his experiments. A bright light shines from the apparently abandoned building revealing two figures, Dr. Noguchi and someone else . . .

Takuto Kaneshiro is currently attending college as a metallurgy student. His girlfriend, Maki Agata also attends his university but has suddenly disappeared. Takuto knows that her professor, Dr. Noguchi, is on the brink of something terrible and races to find her. Once located, the Dr. and Maki talk Takuto into helping with their forbidden science experiment. Just as Frank, the pieced-together alien, is about to come to life, mysterious soldiers cut the power to the secret installation.


A power surge rips through Frank, shocking him to full and sudden life! As he rises from the dead, the building around him is no longer large or strong enough to contain him. Crashing walls and falling debris bury the Dr. as he beams up at his monstrous creation. Takuto watches helplessly as the observation box housing Maki begins to cumble and fall. Frank reaches toward the tubling mass of concrete and wires, arms outstretched almost as if to help, but Takuto's view is suddenly blocked as the roof caves in, covering evryone and everything in a blanket of rock.


Takuto stumbles through the wreckage of M.O.R.G.U.E., seaching desperately for his Maki. He finds the dying Dr. but can do nothing for him. Moving he calls out, "Maki! Maki!" but there is no one to answer him. Finally, through the dust, spotlit by a stray moonbeam is a hand. Takuto stares down at that beloved hand which wears his ring. He falls to his knees and cries out in anguish, blaming fate, the Dr., but most of all Frank for the loss of his love.

Ryu Soma is a bitter quiet man. Born from the ashes of Takuto Kaneshiro, this man walks the line between sanity and madness. His one and only purpose is to destroy the alien being know as the Extra 1, or Frank. With the help of a man named Mr. X, Ryu gets assigned as a Zarg pilot with the military unit FUNERAL, which is now in possession of Frank and also a young girl known as Hattie, the only one who can speak to the alien.


Ryu is torn. This child looks so much like his lost Maki, but she is nothing like that shy quiet medical student. She is demanding and keeps company with his hated enemy Frank, calling the monster a fairy and constantly asking him to take her to fairyland where her family waits for her. Ryu tries to keep his hatred for Frank alive, but as time passes, the rage becomes less and less easy to hold onto. He watches as time and again Hattie orders Frank out to protect the world from the alien invasions. But Frank is a monster! He killed Ryu's beloved Maki! Didn't he?
